Okay, so Skype, that old friend who helped so many of us chat face-to-face online, is saying goodbye. It's going to shut down on May 5th.
Can you believe it's been almost 22 years since Skype first popped up? Back in 2003, it was a total game-changer, letting us make free calls and video chats over the internet. It got super popular, with over 300 million people using it every month at one point in the mid-2010s.
Way before Zoom and FaceTime became household names, Skype was the cool kid on the block, making it easy to talk to people no matter where they were in the world. It really changed how we connected with each other.
Ever wondered why it was called Skype?

So, the story behind the name "Skype" is kind of cool! They originally thought of "Sky peer-to-peer" for the software, which makes sense, right? Then they shortened it to "Skyper." But guess what? Someone had already snagged some of the website names for "Skyper." Oops! So, they just chopped off the last letter, the "r," and boom! "Skype" was born. And luckily, the web addresses for "Skype" were free. Pretty neat how a simple change like that gave us the name we all know today!
Why is Skype shutting down?

So back in 2011, Microsoft thought Skype was the bee's knees and snapped it up for a cool $8.5 billion. Their big idea was to make it the go-to app for everyone to chat and connect.
But then, other cool kids showed up on the block – you know, like WhatsApp and Zoom. And even Microsoft's own app, Teams, started getting all the attention. Slowly but surely, people started using Skype less and less.
So, on February 28th, Microsoft made a call. They decided to say goodbye to Skype on May 5th. They want to keep things simple and focus on Teams for everyone to talk and work together.
This shutdown means that whether you used Skype for free or paid for extra stuff, it's all going to stop. However, if you used "Skype for Business," that's going to stick around for a bit longer.
What about the existing Skype users and their data?

Okay, so Microsoft is giving Skype a little nudge towards retirement, making way for its cooler, more feature-packed sibling, Teams. They're basically saying, "Hey, come on over to Teams! It's easy peasy."
To make the switch, all you gotta do is hop over to skype.com and click on the super obvious button that says something like "Start using Teams." Think of it as moving to a bigger, better house – all your old stuff (chats and contacts) will be waiting for you in Teams, and you can use the same old keys (your login details) to get in.
Just a heads-up, though, they're giving everyone until January 2026 to grab any old chat logs or data they want to keep from Skype.
After that, it's bye-bye forever to that info. So, if there are any precious memories in your Skype chats, now's the time to save 'em!
