Safety Features to Detect and Prevent Scams

To enhance user protection, Meta has upgraded its detection systems, which have already eliminated millions of malicious accounts, and introduced new safety features on its platforms, including Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

On Messenger, users will receive Safety Notices when interacting with accounts exhibiting suspicious behaviour, such as impersonation or unusual contact origins. This feature encourages users to be cautious and reconsider engaging with potentially harmful accounts.

WhatsApp now allows users to silence calls from unknown numbers, blocking unwanted contact from scammers. This update helps protect users from fraudsters attempting to deceive them through unsolicited messages or calls.

Battling Impersonation Scams

Romance scams often involve scammers impersonating military personnel or celebrities to build trust with their victims.

Meta has disrupted numerous scams where fraudsters posed as US military members or famous figures on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

These scammers typically start conversations by expressing loneliness and seeking love, then later request money for alleged expenses such as travel or gifts.

Meta's teams have collaborated with open-source researchers at Graphika to identify and eliminate these fake accounts. They have also blocked websites linked to these scams and removed fraudulent profiles posing as well-known individuals or military members.

Dealing with Fake Matchmaking Agencies

A concerning scam type involves fake dating agencies, where scammers masquerade as matchmaking companies on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Telegram.

They entice users with promises of meeting affluent or attractive individuals, often from abroad, while charging fees for access to these potential matches. Meta has responded by targeting these operations, especially focusing on scammers from Kenya who exploit individuals across Africa.

Education and Collaboration

Meta's anti-scam initiatives extend beyond its platforms, collaborating with law enforcement and industry partners through the Tech Against Scams Coalition to share insights, address emerging threats, and enhance detection methods.

The company has also teamed up with safety experts to create educational content that raises awareness about online scams. For instance, in Japan, users receive in-app tips to help them recognize and report romance scams.

Additionally, Meta partners with non-governmental organizations like Childhelp in the U.S. to educate young people about online safety. Through these efforts, Meta aims to reach users globally and empower them with the knowledge to avoid falling victim to scams.

Meta’s Promise to Safety

In its ongoing battle against online fraud, Meta has eliminated over 400,000 scam accounts in the past year, particularly from Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon.

The company is also piloting facial recognition technology to fight impersonation scams. If a profile picture from a suspicious account matches that of a public figure, Meta's systems will flag and remove it.
